In memory of the horrific Bombay explosion of April 1944 at Victoria dock. The freighter, SS Fort Stikine was carrying a mixed cargo of gold, ammunition and 1400 tons of explosives which caught fire and led to its dreadful destruction. The burning material set fire to the slums in the area and the effects of the blast were shockingly felt all the way till Shimla, a city over 1700 km away from Bombay. The ship's captain, Naismith, who lost his life in the explosion, had described the cargo as "just about everything that will either burn or blow up", as a warning that went unheard.
